A pop-up shop filled with elaborate and stunning carnival costumes is now open in Hamilton.

The Party People shop gives customers a chance to see the full impact of the specially designed costumes that will feature in the Bermuda Carnival in June.

In the past there has been limited opportunity to display the costumes ahead of the event. But this year, Party People Entertainment has taken over a large space on the fourth floor of the Emporium Building on Front Street for a few weeks to make the outfits more accessible for viewing, and to give customers an opportunity to be measured for a fitting, and try out a costume or a headdress.

Talia Braithwaite, a Bermuda Carnival band leader, said residents are becoming increasingly comfortable with dressing up for the event, which is now in its fourth year. She said the pop-up shop was a chance for them to get a feel for this year’s designs.

“We are letting people try on some of headpieces. Some people have only seen them [the outfits] in pictures. When you see them with your naked eye you see the full beauty of the costumes,” she said, mentioning that customers can be measured up for an outfit to ensure it is a perfect fit.

The outfits are custom designed in Trinidad, and this year the themes is “Devas”, with the three designs called Eecha, Amazonia, and Irazu, representing “divine beings and goddesses”.

A one-day costume viewing was held at CedarBridge Academy at the beginning of the month, and there has also been limited opportunities to show some of the costumes at the De Oil Shop in Washington Mall. But the fourth-floor space in the Emporium Building is an opportunity to put the entire range on show.

Monica Maldonado and Jacklyn Lambert were looking after the pop-up shop yesterday. Ms Maldonado said: “We wanted to display all the costumes so people could see what we are offering, and they can come and get measured up.”

Party People has a website, where costumes can be viewed and ordered, together with a presence on Facebook and Instagram.

Ms Maldonado said there had been a lot of interest in the pop-up shop since it was featured on Party People’s social media. She said another bonus of having the pop-up was getting to hear feedback from people.

The pop-up, which is due to close after Saturday, is open from 12pm to 2pm Monday to Friday, and 12pm to 4pm on Saturday.

The 2018 Bermuda Carnival falls on the weekend of June 15 to 18.
