Owen Curley scores four in another fine display
Owen Curley netted four times for Griffins to overcome champions Ravens 4-2 in a Bermuda Hockey Federation league match at the National Sports Centre on Sunday.
Curley’s goals for the developmental junior boys team, which took his season tally to 11, secured his side their third win of the season. They occupy second place with ten points, four behind leaders Budgies.
Ravens, the third-best team in the league, got their goals from Lucy Tucker and Meagan Troake, who scored her fifth of the campaign.
On Saturday night, Budgies played out a goalless draw with Robins in adverse weather conditions. It was a second stalemate of the season for the leaders, who now have four wins, two draws and one defeat from seven matches.
Former Bermuda captains LaKae Tavares and Tse Smith, along with Georgia Harris, Amy Harper, Selina Whitter, Yvonna Osborne and Latonia Fray, are the forces behind Budgies’ dominance this season.
With two months remaining before the league ends, Smith, the Budgies captain and team manager, is keen for her team to maintain their momentum from the festive season break.
“Saturday’s match didn’t end with the result we wanted as we hoped to start the second half of the season as we ended the first, by claiming three points,” she said.
“The goalless draw came down to strong defence on both sides and missed opportunities.
“Everyone is now back from travel and the holiday break, so we’re hoping to get back into gear. We are just past the midway stage of the season and, as title contenders, we are looking forward to the upcoming matches.”
In the mixed league, Swizzles defeated Hurricanes 1-0. Despite the loss, Hurricanes remain the top team with seven points, followed by Swizzles a point behind, while Knights are third with four points.
