Man fined for dangerous chase and drug possession

A young man was fined $2,250 for taking police on a dangerous chase that ended in a drug bust.

Makai Furbert, 21, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court yesterday to dangerous driving and possession of a controlled drug.

The court heard that police in an unmarked vehicle saw Furbert speeding along Frog Lane in Devonshire while carrying a pillion passenger.

Officers followed him and activated their emergency lights after he turned on to Old Military Road, but Furbert continued to speed away on the wrong side of the road.

Furbert continued to drive in the wrong lane after turning on to Parsons Lane, ignoring a stop sign as he did so and swerving throughout both lanes.

During this chase, two vehicles were forced to swerve to avoid a collision.

Furbert failed to make the right turn at the junction of Parsons Lane and Barkers Hill and crashed into the boundary wall.

He attempted to escape on foot but police caught and arrested him.

They searched him and found a clear plastic bag filled with a plantlike substance.

It was analysed and discovered to be 12.82g of cannabis.

The incident happened on September 29 last year.

Magistrate Aura Cassidy fined Furbert, from Pembroke, $1,500 for the dangerous driving and $750 for the drugs possession.

She also banned him from the roads for 18 months.
