Man given conditional discharge for road rage

A man was ordered to participate in anger management after he repeatedly punched another man during a confrontation on the road.

Dakari White, 31, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court yesterday to assault and wilful damage.

The court heard that Joffre Pittman rode his motorcycle along Crow Lane, Pembroke, when White rode next to him and made contact with his handlebars.

Mr Pittman accelerated up Trimingham Hill, but he pulled in at the entrance to Inglewood Drive in Paget when he heard White shouting at him.

White then pulled up next to the victim and struck him in the face, breaking Mr Pittman’s helmet visor and eyeglasses.

Mr Pittman rode down Middle Road to avoid him, but White followed and continued yelling at him.

He eventually pulled into Warwick Rubis Gas Station, closely followed by White, who struck him again in the face while yelling obscenities.

Police were called to the scene but White left before their arrival.

He later turned himself in to police where he admitted the assault.

The incident took place on June 16 last year.

Legal counsel for White, from Hamilton Parish, described the incident as a “road rage” situation that occurred after Mr Pittman allegedly cut him off.

The defence lawyer said that his client did not chase Mr Pittman down, but happened to be driving in the same direction.

White expressed regret, adding that he was taking anger management courses.

He told the court: “In hindsight I should have just left him alone. Looking back on it, the circumstances did not excuse the outcome.”

Magistrate Aura Cassidy sentenced White to a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered him to continue anger management classes through the courts.

She also ordered White to pay a restitution fine of $619 for the damage done to Mr Pittman’s glasses.
