Queen’s Six return to aid local children’s charity
Windsor Castle’s renowned vocal ensemble, The Queen’s Six, are set to return to Bermuda for two special concerts in April.
It is a fundraiser for Amber’s Wings, a local charity that uses horses to help children “manage trauma, foster personal growth and build meaningful connections”.
The concerts were founded by Heidi Michelsen after the tragic loss of her daughter, Amber Bridges, to raise awareness of the charity’s work in the community and generate much needed funds to support its expansion.
Amber’s Wings supports 12 children with “another 20 waiting for everything to fall into place for them to be able to join the programme”. The hope is that the concerts provide the funding to help an additional 36 children for a year and establish a permanent base of operations.
The Queen’s Six, an a cappella group based at Windsor Castle, performed before a sold-out audience during the Bermuda Festival of the Performing Arts in 2019. Ms Michelsen hopes the singers will attract people who are not familiar with her charity.
“It’s just such an amazing opportunity for us to get out of our circle,” she said. “We are trying to get our information out there and prove to people that we are successful and that our mission is attainable and helpful but we seem to be circling round and round the same groups. This is completely out of our wheelhouse, and hopefully it attracts people that we wouldn’t ordinarily get to talk to about Amber’s Wings.”
The show is to be produced by Bermudian Carl Paiva and TJ Armand, a former executive director of the Bermuda Festival. Together, they operate Armand & Paiva LLC, a New York-based company.
“TJ and I are very proud to facilitate this opportunity to support such a great cause with the internationally acclaimed The Queen’s Six,” said Mr Paiva, the former owner and chief executive of C-Travel.
“Their sold-out shows in 2019 at the City Hall were amazing and I’m certain their return to Bermuda will be triumphant at St Theresa’s Cathedral.”
Amber’s Wings launched with a small group of children between the ages of 5 and 18 in April 2023. Ms Michelsen is pleased to see how it has grown.
“Everyone who's gone through our programme has really seen a difference in themselves. Their parents or caregivers have definitely appreciated and noticed and bought into what we're doing and so the word is really getting out there,” she said.
“I think in the very near future we are going to have to have our own property. So that's another hurdle that we're really trying to work through right now.”
Building the charity has been a “life-changing” experience for Ms Michelsen.
“Amber's Wings was born out of a deeply personal grief journey and a profound desire to make a difference. I wanted to create a space where children facing challenges could find hope, healing and strength,” she said.
“I knew that this was my calling as soon as I lost Amber. What I didn't know is how helpful it would be in my healing journey. To see the changes and the appreciation and the growth in our children is just amazing for me.”
The Queen's Six was established in 2008. Its members regularly perform before the Royal Family. Worldwide, the group is known for its “unique blend of Renaissance polyphony, madrigals, and contemporary pop arrangements”.
Member Simon Whiteley said the group was looking forward to performing here again.
“After our concerts on the island back in 2019, we cannot wait to return to beautiful Bermuda for our two concerts helping to raise funds for Amber’s Wings. This incredible charity does such important work and we’re so pleased to support them.”
While it serves as a fundraiser, the show also offers the same opportunity for a “great night out” that the Bermuda Festival provided before it ended in 2023, Ms Michelsen said.
“It's being held at St Theresa's Cathedral but I want people to understand that that doesn't mean it's a religious concert. It's just acoustically, it's a brilliant spot to hold a concert. It's gorgeous there so that's why we chose the spot and St Theresa’s was very generous in allowing us to have it there in support of Amber’s Wings.”
She encouraged people buying tickets on the Amber’s Wings website to “look around and see what we do”.
“I’d love it if they got familiar and supported the cause but either way it will be a great night. And I will talk about Amber’s Wings each night just to let them know what they're there to support, to remind them that they're also there to help others.”
• The Queen’s Six will perform at St Theresa’s Cathedral on April 4 and April 5 at 8pm and 8.30pm respectively. Tickets start at $49. To purchase, visitwww.amberswings.netor contact Amberswings7@gmail.com
