Young Bermudian dies after US road crash on New Year’s Day
A 21-year-old Bermudian has died in the United States after crashing on January 1 during dangerous winter driving conditions in West Virginia.
Somers Mello, a graduate of the Saltus Class of 2021, was an athlete on the Bermuda Volleyball Association’s under-18 team with an interest in media.
According to the Wood County sheriff’s office in West Virginia, Mr Mello was driving a Dodge Durango on New Year’s Day and travelling north on the Interstate 77.
The vehicle encountered “snow and icy conditions” and lost control, striking the guardrail of a bridge over the Williamstown Pike.
The sheriff’s office said that Mr Mello was thrown from the vehicle and taken to hospital for treatment. However, he succumbed to his injuries.
