A teacher shortage at Whitney Institute Middle School resulted in the early dismissal of its students today, the Ministry of Education announced.

A spokeswoman for the ministry said: “The Department of Education is fully aware of the teacher shortage at Whitney Institute Middle School, which has resulted in today’s early dismissal of students.

“The department is addressing this matter with the principal, the Whitney Institute School Board and the Bermuda Union of Teachers to resolve the staffing challenges swiftly.

“We sincerely apologise to parents, guardians and students for the inconvenience caused by this unexpected closure.”

The spokeswoman said the school would update parents this evening regarding the resumption of classes.

She added: “Further updates will follow after parents and students have been informed.”

Students of Sandys Secondary Middle School were sent home last week because of a lack of staff.
