Nahki Wells: I’m playing best football of my career

Nahki Wells scores for Bristol City against Blackburn Rovers

Nahki Wells feels he is playing some of the “best football of my career” after scoring two goals in games for Bristol City last week.

The Bermudian striker scored in City’s 2-2 draw away to Sheffield Wednesday in the Sky Bet Championship last week and followed that by grabbing the winning goal after coming off the bench in a 2-1 triumph at home to Blackburn Rovers last Saturday.

“I’m delighted to be back among the goals and, of course, nothing beats that feeling of scoring a winning goal,” Wells, 34, told The Royal Gazette.

“It's nice to get back-to-back goals but more importantly it’s that the goals all matter and help the team.

“The one the other night was great as it helped to get a point away at Sheffield Wednesday, in what was a tough, scrappy game, and to then score the winner on Saturday coming off the bench was another great thing.

“I am very happy to be back among the goals and in the last two months I feel I have been playing some of the best football of my career. I’m getting the rewards of my goals and been involved in a lot of the build-up play, assisting the team and being a part of most of our big wins.”

The former Bermuda captain, who has netted seven times this season, ended a run of 11 games without a goal against Wednesday, but has now overcome his frustrations to help propel his side to the fringe of the play-offs.

“Not to have scored was killing me,” Wells said.

“I missed a couple of chances and it almost felt like where are the goals going to come from? But I was able to take one at Sheffield Wednesday and then take one again on Saturday.

“Going back-to-back is important. It’s a good feeling and, with the position that we are in, there's no better time to try and go on a run and find good goalscoring form. I want to help the team try and push into those play-off places that we ultimately would like to get to at the end of the season.”

City are in eighth place in the Championship on 41 points, just three points behind Middlesbrough, who occupy the final play-off position in sixth, and Wells is optimistic that the team can achieve great things under head coach Liam Manning.

“The manager keeps us quite level-headed and as a senior player I try to be as present as much as possible and not worry about the past too much,” he said.

“We can't control the future so we aim to just stay in the present as much as possible. If we do that and work in small blocks, focusing on one or two games moving forward, that will be to our benefit and hopefully is enough to get us through.

“Most sides in the division have not blown us out of the water so I really feel like we can get something from every single game, unlike in the past when you know at times that you just can't. I genuinely feel like we can pick up points against every team so we just have to stay optimistic and positive.”

City are entering a crucial stage of the season and their push for the play-offs continue with a trip to mid-table Oxford United in their next match on Saturday, followed by games against Swansea City and Cardiff City in Wales, just over the border to the West Country.

“It's a big month coming up, starting away to Oxford who are a side with mixed performances. Then it’s on to Swansea, which is somewhat of a derby with the Welsh against the English, and then we get to the real derby with Cardiff,” Wells said.

“I think our next four games are very winnable and could be a huge contributing factor to whether or not we can get in those places, but we will attack them.

“We pretty much have a fully fit squad, so it's a great time to be here and I am just loving it.

“Nothing beats scoring a goal and that feeling will never change. It actually only gets better and I am really looking forward to how the remaining four months of the season go.”
