A charity that specialises in musical education gave three youngsters scholarships and spots in upcoming concerts for their performances in a stringed instrument competition.

Violist Prince Domingo placed first in the Menuhin Foundation’s Scholarship Competition on January 18 and will perform in the foundation’s annual concert on June 8.

Violinists Ruth “Bella” Correia and Oscar Regan tied for second and will perform in the Menuhin Foundation’s spring concert on March 15.

A spokesman said: “All participants demonstrated a commendable level of dedication, hard work and effort in the performance of the pieces that they selected for the competition, and made a favourable impression on the judges.”

The competition was aimed at young musicians being assessed by the Associated Board for the Royal Schools of Music at a Grade 5 level or higher.

The bursary amount was not disclosed.

The Menuhin Foundation, established in 1976, promotes music theory and specialises in lessons for the violin, viola and cello.

It runs a primary school programme and offers individual lessons for children and adults.

The spokesman said that the organisation’s primary school programme had a “significant impact” on thousands of students and helped to build Bermuda’s artistic community.

He added: “This programme is a cornerstone of The Menuhin Foundation's mission, aiming to provide all Bermudian children with access to the unique social, emotional and intellectual benefits of learning to play a string instrument.

“The programme's success is made possible by the generous financial support of our donors, including the Bermuda Government, various foundations, the corporate community and individuals.

“We would also like to acknowledge the invaluable contributions of our dedicated teachers, parent volunteers and schoolteachers and educators, who play a crucial role in making this programme a success.”
