Adrian Roach prepares for Brampton Cup rematch
Boxer Adrian Roach is relishing a second chance in the Brampton Cup against Josh Melvin.
Roach takes on Melvin in the male elite 71kg division in Ontario, Canada, on Friday at 2pm Bermuda time a year after losing a close contest by two rounds to one against the Canadian in the semi-final last year.
As the two prepare to square off in the quarter-finals of Canada’s largest Olympic-style boxing tournament, the Bermudian has vowed to get things right this time.
“Second time around is always more exciting,” Roach told The Royal Gazette.
“There’s never been an opponent that I met in a rematch and didn't beat, so I’m looking to continue that streak. I know I can beat him and I just had a bad day last year.”
Roach’s opponent is Canada’s No 2 boxer in the super-welterweight division. However, 22-year-old Roach is not letting that deter him from pursuing his 26th career victory.
“I just have to fight my fight because last time I think I fought his fight,” the Bermudian amateur said.
“I've to be smarter in the ring this time around, use my skill and the technical advantages that I have over him. But if it comes down to his strength, then I’m ready to go all out and whatever he brings, I’ll have an answer for it.
“My preparations have been really good. I've been implementing a lot of drills learnt over the last year when I headed out to Las Vegas a couple of times to work with some top trainers.
“I've been running a lot and I’m in great shape. It’s now a matter of applying myself when I get into the ring.”
Should Roach get past Melvin in the last eight, a tougher assignment could be waiting for him in the semi-finals.
“My chances of winning the weight division are looking good,’’ he said.
“But if I beat my opponent on Friday, I’ll most likely be facing the No 1 in Canada, Kuwardeep Manu. I was training with him over the Christmas break and I believe he’ll beat the guy he’s fighting in the quarter-finals.
“I’m not sure of the other guys in the other end of the bracket since I've never heard of them, but I feel like my trajectory will become much easier after fighting against the top two guys in the weight division.
“I expect to be in the final and whoever I meet there, I should be able to beat them. It appears like they put all the more experienced guys in one bracket, and guys with less fights on the other end.”
