The power of your vote
Bermuda, your vote matters! On February 18, your vote is more than just a mark on a ballot — it is a voice, a testimony and a tool for change. Everyone has the power to make change and put who you feel will represent not just you and your constituency but the entire island of Bermuda.
As Bermudians we are called to be stewards of what God has entrusted to us — our time, our talents and our influence. One of the greatest opportunities we have to influence the world for good is through voting. It is not just a civic responsibility, but also a spiritual act of stewardship.
Your responsibility
We all have a serious responsibility that we must not take lightly. We must seek the welfare of our communities and to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God. Voting allows us to advocate for the values we hold dear — justice, compassion and the dignity of all people. It is a way to ensure that those who govern do so in alignment with principles that promote peace and wellbeing.
Seniors, your wisdom is needed
The people you should never forget, discount and ignore are those who have paved the way for you. A lot of our seniors have been forgotten and pushed to the side, treated as if they do not matter. Every person who is a senior citizen deserves the utmost respect, love and honour. Our seniors should not have to ask for anything; nor should they go back into the workforce in order to live an affordable and comfortable life.
Seniors, your wisdom and life experience are invaluable. You have witnessed the ebb and flow of history, and your insights can guide the future. Voting is an opportunity to leave a legacy, ensuring the values and freedoms you have cherished are preserved for generations to come. Your vote is not just a choice; it is a voice for those who cannot yet speak for themselves. It is time for all our seniors to get their voice back, and for them to be heard!
Empowering young people
Empowering young people to vote is essential for building a more representative and forward-thinking democracy. As the next generation of leaders, their views on education, climate change, social justice and economic opportunity should be welcomed. However, barriers such as misinformation, apathy and accessibility often prevent them from participating in elections. By providing education on civic engagement, making voting more accessible and fostering a culture that values their input, we can inspire young people to recognise the power of their vote. When they are informed and engaged, they become catalysts for meaningful change in their community and beyond.
Young people, you are the future, and the decisions taken today will shape the world you inherit. Do not underestimate the power of your vote. Do not let anyone look down on you because of your youth, but set an example in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity. Your energy, vision and passion for change are needed. Step forward boldly and be a part of shaping a better tomorrow.
Choosing candidates, not parties
When it comes to voting, choosing candidates based on their values, policies and leadership qualities rather than simply following a political party is essential for a more thoughtful and effective democracy. Blind party loyalty can lead to overlooked issues and ineffective leadership, while evaluating candidates individually encourages informed decision-making. By researching their stances, track records and commitments to key issues, voters can elect leaders who genuinely align with their priorities. A democracy thrives when citizens vote with knowledge and conviction, ensuring that elected officials truly represent the needs of people rather than just a party agenda.
When each and every one you steps into the voting booth, pray for wisdom and discernment as you decide. Remember to always trust in the Lord with all our hearts and lean not on our understanding. Commit your decision to Him, and He will guide your path.
As election day approaches, every vote holds the power to shape the future. Participating in the political process is not just a right, but a responsibility — one that determines the leadership, policies and direction of our communities and country. By making informed choices, holding leaders accountable and encouraging others to vote, we strengthen democracy and ensure that all voices are heard.
Voting is also an expression of your faith in action. Why? Because as you go into your polling station, you’re not just having faith in the person you are voting for, but you are also saying, “God, I am trusting you with this vote that this is the man or woman for the job.”
This is an opportunity of a lifetime. An opportunity that changes Bermuda for the better; an opportunity for individuals and our communities to shape the future. It allows Bermuda and her people to have a direct say in policies that impact education, healthcare, the economy and social justice. It is a chance to elect leaders who align with your values and hold those in power accountable for their decisions.
Your vote also strengthens democracy by ensuring that diverse voices are heard and represented in the right way. Beyond personal impact, participating in elections inspires others to engage in civic life, creating a ripple effect of awareness and activism.
Bermuda, change begins with you
Your brave action in casting a ballot is one of the most effective ways to create a better future. While no candidate or system is perfect, your participation matters. Your vote matters — use it to make not just a difference, but a better Bermuda!
Let your voice reflect the Bermuda you want to see, live in and be proud of.
In this election season, let us pray for our leaders and our nation. Let us encourage our friends, families and communities to take part in this sacred responsibility. Together, we can be a light in the darkness, a city on a hill, shining God’s love and truth into the world.
Go forth and vote with faith, wisdom and courage. Your voice matters!
