Taxis and minibus drivers will need an authorisation pass to pick up passengers on the cruise ship pier in an effort to improve transport in the area.

The Bermuda Land Management Corporation announced in a statement that it had launched an Authorised Transportation Access Pass with applications now being accepted.

A BLMC spokeswoman said: “This initiative ensures an organised and secure experience for thousands of cruise passengers arriving in Dockyard.

“Licensed minibus and taxi drivers must now obtain an Authorised Access Pass to enter the General Transportation Area.

“Approved drivers will receive an access pass, valid for one year, allowing them to pick up passengers on the cruise ship pier.

“A separate tour pass will be issued to drivers certified through an approved tourism programme, enabling them to offer guided tours.”

The spokeswoman said the programme was intended to “enhance safety” by only allowing verified drivers onto the pier to ensure professional and secure service.

“It also improves organisation by reducing congestion and limiting access to authorised vehicles, while supporting local transportation providers by prioritising licensed drivers and promoting quality services,” she added.

Drivers interested in receiving a pass must provide a valid public service vehicle licence, proof of driver's licence and tourism certification if applicable.

Tabia Butterfield, the facilities manager and port security manager for BLMC, said: “This programme sets a new standard for safety and organisation, ensuring visitors enjoy a seamless start to their Bermuda experience.”
