Sanchez Smith shines at BUT 5K
It was perhaps fitting that the fastest time at the Bermuda Union of Teachers 5K run on Sunday was produced by a student athlete.
Sanchez Smith, aged just 14, crossed the line in 16min 57sec to beat some talented runners more than twice his age. Smith settled for victory in the senior school 5K event but would have won the overall race, finishing 25 seconds before Philip Woollins claimed the men’s title.
Woollins, a regular in the top five at all of Bermuda’s running events, beat Dominique Mayho (17:48) and Matt Boys (18:10) in the men’s race with Stepanka Sprincova (19:48) claiming the women’s crown ahead of Nina Coetzer (20:37) and Sarah Ryan (21:59).
While Smith won the senior school race, the next four runners to finish were all female with Carina Bortoli (20:29), Isla Cooze (21:32), Kelise Wade (23:19) and Leyla Crews (24:10) chasing Smith home.
In the middle school race, Timothy Pearman (6:14) and Sukanya Jobson (6:43) won the boys and girls race respectively in a total field of just eight runners.
There were 38 young athletes in the upper primary race, with Khaleef Daley continuing his outstanding run of form when coming home first in 6:25. He led home David Todd (6:56) and Joshua Cann (7:16) in the boys race, with Yara Muhammad (7:12) edging Peggy Forster (7:14) by just two seconds in the girls race.
The lower primary contest run over 750 metres was won by Luka Evans in 2:41. The next three runners over the line were all female with Vivienne Fox (2:45) beating Riana Robinson (2:49) and Nea Fosker (2:55)
