Visitor hub relocates as Front Street containers come down
An unconventional Front Street landmark is closing out six years in service with the Bermuda Visitors Service Centre getting taken down.
The colourful pink-and-blue containers will close doors on Wednesday and start moving services to the Hamilton Ferry Terminal from Thursday.
The structure, originally the Artemis Racing America’s Cup guest pavilion, began its new role with a temporary permit for five years — but was granted extra time by the Development Applications Board.
The centre’s staff will offer “roaming ambassador services throughout the City” during the transition, the Bermuda Tourism Authority said.
Owen Darrell, the tourism minister, said the BVSC team would offer tourism information, excursion bookings and transportation passes or tokens from the ferry terminal, with visitors able to avail themselves of free wi-fi in the area.
Visitor centre hours will be 10am to 4pm at weekends in Dockyard, or 8am to 4pm when cruise ships are in port.
The St George’s visitor centre will be open from Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm, while Hamilton will be open daily from 10am to 4pm.
The BTA’s merchandise will also move to the new location, with island residents able to get special offers.
Marine and Ports Services welcomed the move, and noted that its partnership with the BTA enhanced visitor experiences.
Wayne Furbert, the transport minister, said the relocation to the terminal would bring support to “a key transit point”.
“With public transportation being the primary mode of travel for many visitors, this move keeps essential services easily accessible,” he said.
It was also hailed as a win by Jakai Franks, the BTA vice-president of operations.
