The diverse contributions of three men to the history of the island is being celebrated by the Corporation of St George.

In its February newsletter, which features dual celebrations of love and Black history, Sir Edward Trenton “E.T.” Richards and Edgar Fitzgerald “E.F.” Gordon, two of the island’s National Heroes, are featured.

Dr Gordon, a labour and civil rights leader who was born in Trinidad & Tobago, arrived on the island in 1924.

Sir Edward, the island’s first Black premier, was born in Guyana. He arrived in Bermuda in 1930.

The Reverend John Stephenson is recognised for his contributions to the island’s history and his role in the Methodist church.

Mr Stephenson, an Irishman who arrived on the island in 1799, was the first permanent Methodist minister in Bermuda.

The corporation said that while there are many stories that contribute to Bermuda’s Black history, the newsletter aims to showcase the diversity of those efforts, which include contributions from the three men.

“Their contributions to the welfare of Bermuda all required hard work, sacrifice and dedication,” it added.

The monthly newsletter covers various town-related matters such as road maintenance and municipal projects.

It also features an open invitation to attend the corporation’s monthly general council meeting, held on the fourth Thursday of each month.

Candy-Lee Foggo, the town manager, said: “We started our newsletter to enhance communication on town issues and to spotlight relevant stories that explain some of the inner workings of the town, as well as its people, businesses and celebrations.

“This month, being the month of love, we highlight the love of home, town and country and include the various restaurants participating in the Bermuda Tourism Authority’s Restaurant Weeks programme.”

The newsletter also noted the 25th anniversary of Unesco World Heritage Site status, which shines a light on St Peter’s Church.
