A dog-focused charity will host its debut event at the Bermuda Zoological Society next week.

A spokeswoman for the Forget Me Not canine centre said the charity will share its mission and plans for the year with stakeholders during the Paws and Celebrate gathering on February 19.

The organisation has found permanent homes for four dogs since it received charitable status last May.

The spokeswoman added: “We like the idea of charities supporting charities; it creates a sense of community and collaboration which is the purpose of this initial event.

“Our belief is that the spirit of giving isn't just about individual efforts, but also about building networks of support that can tackle larger issues more effectively.”

The charity hopes to establish a permanent shelter for its dogs and educate people on how to care for them.

“Due to the lack of a facility where we can safely house dogs in need, we are only able to foster dogs that are safe for our homes,” the spokeswoman said.

“It is frustrating for us to not be able to do more at this time, but we take the safety and welfare of our own — and foster families’ — dogs and families seriously and can't risk taking in dogs without up-to-date vaccinations or ones that have never lived with other dogs.”

The charity said it was glad to work with BZS, Discovery Wines, Two Fish in a Barrel, Bermuda Wine Concierge and private donors for the invitation-only event, and any donations will be accepted.
