Parents will hold a demonstration on Monday to call for a halt on the Ministry of Education’s sweeping reform measures.

The parents of children in Gilbert Institute, who banded together with concerned members of the public, have taken their concerns beyond their Paget school to address the closures of several other education centres.

They have called on others to join them in advocating for a better curriculum and support for schools and staff, as well as “real improvements that put our children first”.

The demonstration follows a petition launched on February 5 to prevent the closure of Prospect Primary School.

Organisers wrote that the idea of the school’s closure was “not only concerning but deeply personal”.

The petition went on to say: “Due to proposed actions, students are at risk of being moved around, separated from their friends and teachers — an experience that's nothing short of stressful.

“Children require a stable environment to excel, not chaos and uprooting to overpopulated schools.

“At Prospect Primary, the students have formed strong connections with both their peers and educators.

“These bonds are crucial for their emotional development and abruptly severing them could lead to long-lasting psychological impacts.”

The petition had 295 signatures at the time of publishing.

Parents and alumni of Gilbert Institute also met outside Modern Mart in Paget to protest the closure of the school.

They were joined by concerned members or the public, including One Bermuda Alliance and independent candidates in Tuesday’s upcoming election.

The demonstration will take place on Monday at the Trimingham Hill Roundabout and East Broadway, as well as nearby bus stops, between 7.45am and 8.30am.

Attendees were encouraged to bring signs.
