Bermuda confident in face of Canada challenge

Leading up to their final group match against Canada in the Concacaf Men’s Under-17 Qualifier on Sunday night, Bermuda captain Logan Jimenez has insisted that they are heading into the clash high in confidence.

Jimenez, who scored in Bermuda’s two wins, knows what is at stake against the group leaders.

“We’re going into it with our heads held high,” the team leader told The Royal Gazette.

“Canada will be a tough game, but we need to bag a win if we want to go through. We need to score a lot of goals. If we win, that’s great. If we don’t go through, we’ll accept it.

“We’re really proud as a team. We've worked really hard to get to this moment with a lot of preparation coming into this tournament.”

Central defender Emeer Peets also spoke of the belief in the Bermuda camp that they can achieve the desired result.

“It’s going to be a tough game,” the Mansfield Town academy player said. “But we’re mentally prepared and full of confidence that we can go out there and get a result.”

Bermuda head into the fixture at Flora Duffy Stadium with a mathematical yet unrealistic chance of topping group A. They need to beat Canada by ten goals to secure qualification for the Fifa Under-17 World Cup in Qatar in November.

Victory for Aaron Lugo’s side will see them finish level with the Canadians on nine points, with Mike Vitulano’s team highly likely to go through on goal difference. Lugo has identified discipline as a key factor to the team’s success over Canada.

“Every team is beatable, it’s up to us to be disciplined on and off the ball,’’ the coach said.

“It’s the under-17 age group so mistakes are possible. We have to limit our mistakes and capitalise on their mistakes, that’s how we’re going to approach the game.

“We have to be disciplined out of possession and play as a team defensively. We need to maintain our shape, be patient and not just dive in when we’re defending.

“When we are in possession of the ball, we have to make sure that we don’t waste it by just blasting it up the field. We have to look for opportunities to combine and hopefully, we can get a result in our favour.”

With wins over Anguilla as well as Turks & Caicos islands in their last two matches, Lugo believes that the worst is over for his team.

“Best-case scenario, we slam Canada and win the group,” he said. “Another scenario is, we win but we don’t get the required goals, I would be really proud of the boys and the effort they put in.

“The worst-case scenario is behind us – losing every game in the tournament. Either way, right now we’re proud of the boys, pleased with their output and we want to make sure that we finish it off on Sunday against Canada.”

Meanwhile, one of the finalists in last season’s FA Cup will be knocked out of the competition on Sunday. St George’s Colts, who defeated North Village 4-0 in the final last April, will look to use home advantage when the two teams clash in the quarter-finals.

It will be an interesting fixture for Village duo interim head coach Calvin Dill Jr and striker Jonté Smith. The two were part of the victorious St George’s side, and are now seeking success on the opposite end.

“Both teams were hoping that we don’t meet each other before the final,” Dill said.

“But that’s how the chips have fallen, so as Village we just have to do what we need to do. For some of the players at Village, they’ll be looking for revenge from last season.

“It’s exciting for me and a couple of my friends down there to know that I was coaching with them, now I’m coaching against them. But they always knew where my home was, I always made it clear that Village was my home.

“We’re looking for the double. It’s still a long way to go, we are trying our best to keep the players fit, technically smart and humble until the job is done.”

Village and St George’s have also posted interesting results on the two occasions they have met in the league. Smith marked his return to Wellington Oval, where he still plays cricket for the East Enders, by scoring a penalty and creating a goal in a 3-1 triumph for league leaders. Last month, St George’s spoilt Village's return to Bernard Park with a 3-2 victory in Pembroke.

In matches scheduled for Saturday, Paget, who knocked Dandy Town out of the competition, have a great chance to make it to the next stage when they face First Division side St David’s at Southampton Oval.

Eleven-times winners PHC have Dudley Eve Trophy champions Hamilton Parish standing in their way on Stadium Lane.
