Court Street entrepreneur launches luxury wooden watch
North Hamilton entrepreneur and product designer Malachi Eversley sees an insatiable appetite for Bermuda-inspired merchandise.
At Harbour Nights, visitors and locals alike snatch up the island-themed hats, rain coats and tracksuits in his Seven Collection.
“Tourists really like Bermuda apparel,” said Mr Eversley. “My cotton tracksuit is probably my most popular item. The feedback from that has been great.”
His local clients often return to see if he has anything new.
To feed the hunger, he recently added a luxury wooden watch with a Bermuda longtail on it.
“I decided to do a Bermuda watch because I had not seen one on the market before,” he said. “I wanted to do something that looked more natural, not like the usual gold and silver watches. This should appeal to visitors and locals alike. It would also be a nice gift for corporations who bring clients to the island.”
He has designed many products, but this was his first timepiece.
“I just used my computer and let it happen,” Mr Eversley said. He works at Street Vybez on Court Street, owned by Demeka Tacklyn. “Initially, I was just going to have the bird on the watch, but then I decided to include the word Bermuda also, so it would grab people.”
His products are manufactured in Pakistan.
“There are different places you can get things made,” he said. “With manufacturers I am mainly looking for quality and price.”
He explained that to first design an item, you have to sketch it out. The manufacturer will do the mock up for you, but he prefers to do it himself. He knows exactly how he wants it.
“It is more time-consuming, if you get the manufacturers to do the mock-up, because then there is a lot of communicating involved to get it right,” he said.
The watch can be purchased at Street Vybez at 40 Court Street, and at Bonita Beauty Supply in the Cedar Parkade, retailing for $65. He hopes to expand to other outlets.
