Regulatory Authority seeking permanent chief executive

Encouraging innovation: the Regulatory Authority of Bermuda is an independent regulator, established under the Regulatory Authority Act 2011 (File photograph)

The Regulatory Authority of Bermuda is seeking to hire its sixth chief executive in the past 13 years.

The post is held at present by Richard Ambrosio, who added the role of interim chief executive to his responsibility as director of legal affairs and enforcement in December 2023.

Now, the RA is advertising for his permanent replacement.

The regulator said: “Our ideal candidate is a transformative leader who can inspire and nurture the esprit de corps of our team, guiding them to reach new heights of achievement and excellence.

“As a national independent regulatory body, the RA protects consumers and respects industry stakeholders, promotes fair business practices that are principled by integrity, and encourages innovation in electronic communications, electricity, submarine communication cables and future regulated industries.”

Philip Micallef became the RA’s first chief executive when he was appointed in October 2012. The RA commenced operations three months later.

Mr Micallef cited “personal reasons” when he left the RA in September 2014.

Robert Watson became the post holder in January 2015 but lasted only nine months before he left, also citing personal reasons.

Kyle Masters, then a legal adviser to the RA, became interim chief executive upon Mr Watson’s departure, just as he had done on two previous occasions.

Matthew Copeland assumed the top job in March 2016, and nearly reached the two-year mark in the post, leaving in February 2018.

Aaron Smith then took on the role on an acting basis.

Denton Williams left an executive position at Ascendant Group to join the RA as chief executive in January 2019, lasting approximately 3½ years in the post.

Abayomi Carmichael, who was formerly senior manager of energy at the RA, began his tenure as chief executive on January 1, 2023.

Mr Ambrosio stepped in to succeed Mr Carmichael when the latter departed before the year was up.

The RA said the successful candidate will report to its board of commissioners and be subject to the direction of the board.

Directive body: Mark Fields, chairman of the Regulatory Authority board of commissioners (File photograph)

Mark Fields is chairman of the board of commissioners. He is joined on the board by commissioners Cheryl-Ann Mapp, Francis Mussenden and Michael Scott.

The advertised position has a closing date of February 28.

The RA is an independent regulatory body that oversees various sectors, including the electricity, electronic communications and submarine communication cables sectors.

The authority said it is committed to promoting competition, safeguarding the interests of residents and consumers, stimulating the Bermudian economy, promoting innovation and fulfilling any additional functions as specified by sectoral legislation.
