Students who want to delve into the world of French language and culture have until the end of the week to apply for a special scholarship featuring three weeks in Cannes.

The application period for the 2025 French Language and Culture Scholarship, offered by the Alliance Française des Bermudes and funded by The Christian Humann Foundation, closes on Friday.

The alliance said in a statement: “Since its launch in 2001, the scholarship has empowered over 100 students in Bermuda to enhance their French skills, embrace new cultural experiences and build memories that last a lifetime.

“The scholarship covers all key expenses, making this experience accessible to students aged 14 to 17.

“This year, five students will be selected based on their enthusiasm and motivation rather than academic achievements, ensuring opportunities for all French learners in Bermuda.”

Recipients will receive round-trip airfare, tuition for the language school, full accommodation and meals, as well as a variety of cultural, recreational and sport activities.

Nh’Lae DeRoza, who received a scholarship in 2023, said the programme was an opportunity for her to embrace unfamiliar experiences and venture outside her comfort zone.

“Whether it was trying new foods, communicating in French, or participating in local traditions, each experience challenged me to be flexible and open-minded,” she said.

“This growth helped me immerse myself more in the culture and also gave me confidence in my ability to adapt to new environments in the future.”

To apply, students must fill out an entry form, available online at alliancefrancaisebda.org and submit a 350-word essay in French on their passion for French language and culture, why they should be selected and how the programme aligns with their goals.

The applicants will also be required to take part in a French-language interview on March 9.
