Jeelise Allen launches specialised grief counselling practice
Bermuda’s only thanatologist, Jeelise, Allen has launched a private counselling practice specialising in grief support. Ms Allen believes it is the first practice of its kind on the island.
Tuwile, meaning “death is inevitable” in Swahili, offers individual and group grief therapy, corporate workshops, and support services for adults. Thanatology is the study of death and the phenomenology and practices around it.
“The name acknowledges the universal reality of loss while providing a compassionate and structured approach to healing,” Ms Allen said.
A Bermudian practitioner with a decade of experience in grief support, Ms Allen holds a bachelor’s in thanatology, a master’s in psychology and a counselling certificate.
She has worked in various counselling capacities over the years and feels that Bermuda needs dedicated grief support now more than ever.
“Grief is not something you simply ‘get over’,” she said.
“It reshapes your world, and without the right support, it can impact mental, emotional and even physical wellbeing.
“I have witnessed first-hand how people struggle in silence with their loss. Tuwile is here to ensure that no one has to navigate their grief alone.”
She said grief affects millions worldwide and research underscores the importance of professional support.
Studies show that prolonged grief disorder affects 7 per cent to 10 per cent of bereaved individuals, leading to severe emotional distress, depression and anxiety.
Unresolved grief can increase the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure and a weakened immune system.
Workplaces experience higher absenteeism and decreased productivity when employees struggle with grief, emphasising the need for corporate workshops and support systems.
To ensure accessible and convenient services, Tuwile operates from two locations: Mayvera for general grief counselling and the Women’s Resource Center for services specifically supporting women.
Ms Allen said with the launch of Tuwile, Bermudians now have a dedicated space to process loss, build resilience and find a path forward.
