A former student of The Berkeley Institute has been appointed as chairman of the institution’s governing body.

Kyle Masters takes over from Craig Bridgewater, who retired from the role after 15 years of “distinguished leadership”.

The appointment, which was given the green light by the The Berkeley Educational Society, was made at the institution’s annual meeting on Monday, when the school’s governing body provided its annual report.

The school said that with Mr Bridgewater at the helm, its governing body remained steadfast in upholding the institution’s mission of academic excellence, teacher excellence, student empowerment, preservation of legacy and community engagement.

It added: “His leadership leaves a strong foundation upon which future progress can be built.”

Anika DeShields, the chairwoman of the society, praised Mr Bridgewater and thanked him for his service.

She said: “His dedication, vision and unwavering commitment have greatly contributed to the continued success and growth of The Berkeley Institute.

“Mr Bridgewater’s guidance and leadership have been invaluable, and we are deeply appreciative of all your efforts in advancing The Berkeley Institute’s mission.”

She said the society welcomed Mr Masters as the new chairman of the institution’s governing body.

Ms DeShields added: “We look forward to the fresh perspectives, energy and leadership that Mr Masters will bring to the table.

“With his experience and dedication, we are confident that he will continue the great work begun by his predecessor and guide The Berkeley Institute towards even greater achievements.”

Mr Bridgewater said: “It has been an immense privilege to have been the caretaker and protector of the legacy of The Berkeley Institute and to oversee the building of its most recent chapter — standing on the shoulders of our founding fathers and the previous 13 chairs of the board.”

He said the school has always prioritised student success.

Mr Bridgewater added: “The ingredients in this recipe are teacher excellence, programme excellence, excellent student conduct, preservation of our legacy and preservation of our self-governance.”

Mr Masters, a member of The Berkeley Institute’s class of 2000, reflected on the school’s legacy and his commitment to its continued progress.

He said: “The Berkeley Institute has always stood as a pillar of excellence, resilience and empowerment.

“While my journey took me beyond these walls before graduating, the values instilled in me here remain foundational in my life.

“I am grateful for the work Mr Bridgewater has done over the past 15 years, ensuring that our school remains strong and forward-thinking.

“It is an honour to now serve in this capacity, building on that legacy and working alongside a dedicated team to advance our mission and provide our students with the best possible opportunities.”

Mr Masters will lead the institution’s governing body alongside Garita Coddington, the deputy chairwoman, William Usher Jr, the treasurer, and members Sean Tucker, Scott Pearman, Meisha Medford, Nadir Wade and Merate-Kristos Place.

June Hill and Andre Carr will serve as ex officio members, representing The Berkeley Educational Society and the Parent Teacher Student Association, respectively.
