Springtime date for Budget Statement announced
Dates for the breakdown of the 2025-26 Budget and the new Governor’s Speech from the Throne have been set.
A government spokeswoman said that Budget Day will be on May 2 and will once again be led by David Burt, the Premier and Minister of Finance.
Parliament is also scheduled to be convened on March 14.
Mr Burt acknowledged the relatively late date set for Budget Day, which usually is in February but has been put off because of the General Election last week.
He said: “It is important that we take the necessary time to align our proposed expenditure with the need to deliver on our key platform initiatives.
“Ministers will have the opportunity to work closely with technical officers in ensuring we craft a budget that addresses those key issues identified by the people as we met them on the doorstep.”
Section 96 of the Bermuda Constitution Order 1968 outlines how the Government should handle the dissolution of the legislature “less than three months before the commencement of any financial year”.
It says that any new budget estimates can be laid out before the House of Assembly “as soon as practicable after the commencement of that year”.
A government spokeswoman added: “Accordingly, and in keeping with Section 97 of the Constitution, the House of Assembly will be invited to approve a resolution to extend the necessary fiscal provisions to ensure the continued operation of the Government and all public services until the 2025-26 Budget is approved.”
Andrew Murdoch, the Governor, confirmed the date for his Throne Speech in the Official Gazette today.
The speech will outline the Government’s legislative and policy priorities.
The Throne Speech will be read as part of a ceremony on the Cabinet Office lawn after the House of Assembly and Senate meet to conduct their business.
This business will include the swearing-in of Cabinet members and the election of leaders in both Houses.
The Governor’s proclamation noted that the legislature was dissolved on January 8.
It said that in line with advice received from the Premier, in the next session of the legislature the Senate will meet in the Cabinet building and the House of Assembly will meet at Veritas Place.
The Governor added: “And I do further appoint that the next session of the legislature shall commence at 10am on Friday, March 14, 2025.”
