KBB hopes family trash clean-up will inspire others
The head of an environmental charity invited her family members to take part in a trash clean-up to honour the legacy of their late matriarch.
Angel Smith, the executive director of Keep Bermuda Beautiful, organised the event in memory of her great-grandmother Mary Somner and to give back to the community she loved.
More than 35 family members gathered at the top of Cedar Hill in Hamilton Parish where Ms Somner grew up and raised her family.
Ms Smith said: “Family members spanning generations and ranging in ages from 3 to 80 years old, met and devised a plan to set out in different directions to clean up the neighbourhood.
“Among them was the family's current matriarch, 80-year-old Edna Ameenah Sharrieff, who kept pace with the younger collectors, demonstrating her commitment to keeping Bermuda beautiful.”
Ms Smith said the efforts were “nothing short of remarkable” having collected 649lb of litter.
She added: “Their contributions didn’t stop there. Several men in the group took it a step further by trimming overgrown trees and clearing debris, ensuring the neighbourhood looked better than they found it.
“Their dedication transformed the area into a cleaner and more inviting space, much to the appreciation of local residents including Mary’s youngest son Lawrence and his family, who still reside in the neighbourhood.”
Ms Smith said she hopes the initiative will inspire others to take action in their own neighbourhoods.
“Together, we can all do our part to keep Bermuda beautiful,” she said.
