Two government ministers had a night at the movies when they attended the annual Crime Stoppers Bermuda Film Experience on Saturday.

Owen Darrell, the Minister of Tourism, Transport, Culture and Sport, and Michael Weeks, the Minister of National Security, saw the Bermuda premiere screening of The Waterboyz.

The film tells the story of two young men growing up in Atlanta. They have ambitions to broaden their horizons but make different choices that lead to tragedy.

Bermudian scriptwriter Sia Spence was an associate producer on the film.

After the screening at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute, a panel discussion was held to address the topics of youth, race, identity and violence.

Ms Spence took part in that discussion along with producers Dolapo Erinkitola and Tirrell D. Whittley.

After the event, Mr Darrell said: “Film is a powerful tool for storytelling and preserving our history.

“The Waterboyz exposes the importance of highlighting underrepresented voices and unique stories.

“We look forward to supporting film projects like this here in Bermuda and continuing to work with our artists, especially our young men.”

Mr Darrell also thanked Crime Stoppers for hosting the event, emphasising its role in fostering important community conversations.

Mr Weeks said: “This film mirrors the challenges faced by young Black men in Bermuda, particularly with violence and limited opportunities.

“It forces us to confront these realities and work together towards solutions that support our youth. I am extremely proud of Sia Spence and her team for bringing this project to life.”

Ms Spence shared her appreciation to the Bermudian audience for their support of her first credited film and urged the Government to continue investing in film talent in Bermuda.

She added: “Bringing international film-makers together with Bermudian talent shows the potential of film as part of Bermuda’s tourism industry.

“I hope the Bermuda Tourism Authority and the ministry will explore ways to develop this sector and share Bermudian stories with the world.”
