Sri Lankan association donates 150 chairs
Scores of chairs have been given to a Catholic church and a school in Pembroke by the Sri Lankan Association of Bermuda.
The group, which held its third annual community service day on March 2, donated 150 plastic chairs to St Theresa’s Cathedral and Victor Scott Primary School.
The chairs, which were split between the two, were matched with a new outdoor sound system for Victor Scott.
The Most Reverend Wesley Spiewak, the Bishop of the Diocese of Hamilton, accepted 80 of the chairs during a ceremony in Warwick.
He was joined by the Reverend Dandy Traje, the rector of St Theresa’s Cathedral, and Karen Scarth, its office administrator.
A spokesman for the association said that the members of the cathedral all showed gratitude for the donation.
Theresa Oswald-Sinclair, the administrative assistant at Victor Scott Primary School, accepted the rest of the chairs on behalf of the school.
She said that this, combined with the sound system, would have a lasting positive impact on the school.
Justin Joseph, the president of the Sri Lankan Association of Bermuda, thanked Fourways Restaurant in Warwick for its sponsorship, which enabled the group to acquire the chairs.
He also thanked restaurant staff for helping to collect and deliver the chairs.
A spokesman for the association said that the group’s annual volunteer day was driven by the want to “give back to this beautiful Bermuda”.
He added: “The Sri Lankan Association of Bermuda's dedication to giving back to their second home continues to strengthen the bonds of community and the spirit of generosity and goodwill.”
