BHB announces appointments of oncologists and executive
Two oncologists and a new executive have joined the Bermuda Hospitals Board.
A BHB spokeswoman said Dagmara Poprawski and Bhanu Bandlamudi joined King Edward VII Memorial Hospital’s oncology team last month.
Dr Poprawski worked as a medical oncology consultant at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre in Saudi Arabia before joining the BHB.
She earned degrees in tropical medicine and hygiene and clinical tropical medicine from Mahidol University in Thailand, and a certificate in geriatric oncology from Universita Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Italy.
Dr Bandlamudi, who received degrees from the Indian institutions Kasturba Medical College and Jawaharial Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, was a medical and radiation oncology consultant in Subha Comprehensive Cancer Care, also in India, before coming to Bermuda.
The spokeswoman said the new doctors, along with oncologist Alisha Tucker, “means we now have three full-time oncologists available and can offer our usual in and out-patient oncology services.”
She thanked community partners, including the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre and Pals, for working to maximise oncology care provision on the island.
The BHB also announced Paul Jones as chief people officer.
Mr Jones is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development and returns on a five-year contract to the BHB, where he served as interim human resources officer and adviser to a modernisation programme.
In the new role, he is responsible for human resources, organisational development and strategy services — all of which previously fell under the deputy chief executive role that is no longer filled.
Mr Jones said: “Like hospitals around the world, BHB has been through and continues to face many challenges.
“With 1,800 employees, who deliver Bermuda’s only 24/7 hospital services, the importance of making BHB a place people want to work is so important to delivering the very best services to our community.”
BHB president and chief executive R. Scott Pearman said: “He has an excellent skill set for the challenges we face as an organisation, and relevant experience across the NHS in senior and strategic human resources leadership roles.
“Motivated, supported, appropriately compensated and well-trained staff deliver the best care and this is what Mr Jones will help us achieve.”
