Back to Parliament: the Cabinet Office, traditionally the setting for the delivery of the Throne Speech (File photograph)

The opening of Parliament, a ceremony steeped in tradition, is set for this morning, when the legislative agenda for the upcoming year will be delivered before the public.

The Convening of the Legislature comes with a procession of lawmakers, summoned by the Black Rod — the Governor’s official messenger — down to the lawns of the Cabinet Office on Front Street.

The ceremony will be preceded by the elections of a Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly, along with the President and Vice-President of the Senate.

Additionally, all members of the legislature will take their official parliamentary oaths.

Andrew Murdoch, the new Governor after the departure of Rena Lalgie, will proceed next with the formal reading of the Throne Speech.

The previous Throne Speech was delivered in November, but the legislature was dissolved in January in accordance with the Bermuda Constitution when the General Election was called for February 18.

The Progressive Labour Party retained the Government, although the One Bermuda Alliance came away from the polls with a stronger complement of seats in the House — 11 out of 36.

The event will be broadcast from 10.15am on the Government’s Facebook page and YouTube channel, along with CITV.
