Covid-19 five years on: ‘Pandemic saw us at our best’

Lessons learnt: Kim Wilson, the Minister of Health (File photograph by Akil Simmons)

The island faced up to the threat of the Covid-19 pandemic “with courage and determination”, according to Kim Wilson, the Minister of Health.

Ms Wilson was speaking ahead of the fifth anniversary of the virus arriving on Bermuda’s shores.

The island logged its first two cases of on March 18, 2020, a week after a pandemic had been declared by the World Health Organisation and a little more than a month after Sars-CoV-2 became better known as Covid-19.

Both cases were in residents who arrived on the island after overseas trips — one from Britain and one from the United States.

However, the Government, aware of the risk of asymptomatic spread, had already assumed other cases were on the island.

Facing an unprecedented health emergency, the Government introduced a series of measures, including shutting down the airport, social distancing and curfews.

The virus reached its peak almost two years later.

In January 2022, there were almost 2,000 active cases on the island. The virus would go on to claim at least 165 lives.

Last night, Ms Wilson said that the number of recorded cases stood at 20,201, but the virus was no longer classified as a pandemic.

She said: “Covid-19 is now managed as an ongoing health issue, similar to other diseases. As of February 28, 2025, a total of 20,201 Covid-19 cases have been reported.

“Following the World Health Organisation’s declaration that Covid-19 is no longer a public health emergency of international concern, the reporting of Covid-related deaths to the Emergency Service Unit underwent changes.

“Consequently, the latest available data on Covid-related deaths is from April 2023, with a total of 165 deaths recorded up to that point.”

Ms Wilson, who as health minister was very much the public face of the Government’s drive to stem the spread of the virus, said she was “proud” of the manner in which the island rallied at a time of national emergency.

She said: “Our healthcare professionals, frontline responders and our community stepped forward with courage and determination.

“The success of our vaccination programmes and the collective commitment to public health measures were instrumental in protecting lives and overcoming the challenges posed by Covid-19.

“I am proud of the remarkable strength and unity demonstrated by the people of Bermuda during the Covid-19 pandemic.”

Ms Wilson warned that it was still important for residents to get vaccinated and for the most vulnerable to ensure that their vaccines were up to date.

She said: “Vaccination remains a key strategy. Updated Covid-19 vaccines are available and individuals, especially those aged 65 and older or with chronic conditions, are encouraged to stay up to date.

“Demand for vaccines has decreased but efforts continue to ensure accessibility.

“The impact of the pandemic has indeed been transformative for Bermuda. The weight of the sacrifices endured, alongside the strength and unity shown by our community, paints a picture of resilience that cannot be overstated.

“Covid-19 challenged us in ways we could never have imagined, yet it also showcased the enduring spirit of the people of Bermuda.

“As we look ahead, it is important to hold on to the lessons this experience has taught us about the importance of community, vigilance and adaptability.

“By continuing to support one another and prioritising public health, we can safeguard the progress we’ve made and face future challenges with the same courage and determination that defined us throughout the pandemic.”
