Nichol Shield brings down curtain on rugby season
Action draws to a close in the domestic rugby season tonight when the East takes on the West in the Nichol Shield at North Field, National Sports Centre (7pm).
Players from the island’s three men’s teams — Teachers, Police and Renegades — have been divided into two teams for this Cup Match-style fixture.
The available players are expected to showcase the best of what Bermuda rugby has to offer. League champions Teachers are expected to have a high representation on both sides.
For the women, who played in the Scully Cup two weeks ago, they will also be taking to the field as a curtain-raiser to the men’s fixture. The women are likely to engage in five-a-side rugby under the East and West banners.
When the action ends on the field, attention turns to the pavilion for the Bermuda Rugby Football Union end of season awards. Players, coaches and administrators will be recognised for their contribution to the sport, with nine prizes to be given out.
Teachers men’s captain Hadleigh Tucker, who had an outstanding season leading his side to the league title, is one of the favourites to win the men’s top accolade.
Not only did the Bermuda sevens captain represent his club with distinction this season, but the 27-year-old also showed his passion for the game by adding up numbers whenever other teams were short. This could also see him bag the fair play award.
D’zuri Gill, Tucker’s team-mate at Teachers, was equally outstanding this season. Also in contention is Jason Chlup of Police, together with Jamie Baum, the Renegades versatile player.
For the women, Heidi Groves, Akila Craig, Cat Morris, and Anna Hutchinson are some of the favourites to take the top accolade.
