Kenni Thompson in the goals for flawless Bournemouth
Kenni Thompson netted her fifth goal of the season and provided two assists as champions Bournemouth’s thrashed Women's National League Division One South West rivals Southampton 7-0 at Canotec Stadium on Wednesday.
The Bermudian midfielder scored the home side’s third goal as the Cherries made it 20 wins in as many matches to keep their hopes of achieving the perfect season intact with two games remaining.
“It’s good to be back on the scoresheet and I am always looking to contribute with goals,” Thompson told The Royal Gazette.
“Winning the game as a team is obviously the priority but when I can help out myself it’s a big boost.”
Ellie Strippel broke the deadlock in the fifth minute with a stunning strike from 25 yards that found the top corner.
Thompson grabbed her first assist two minutes later when forward Erin Bloomfield headed in her cross to double the Cherries’ advantage.
Forward Jenna Markham made it 3-0 before Thompson got in on the scoring act in the fourteenth minute when her cross navigated through a crowd of players and found the back of the net.
Thompson, 24, earned a second assist of the match in the 50th minute when defender Helen Bleazard headed in her corner.
Strippel and Markham, who is tied with 17 goals in the race for the golden boot, then completed their braces to cap the Cherries’ dominant display and preserve their unblemished record.
“Our win streak is incredible actually,” Thompson said.
“I think coming from last season we went unbeaten and that unfortunately still wasn’t enough to win the league, so we definitely came in with the mindset that we keep everything in our control and doing that is winning games.
“It’s definitely gone better than expected, but we have two games to go and obviously we want to still push to wins those two games and make it 22 out of 22.
“It’s going to be a challenge, but we are closing in on it and all that matters is what we do in the next two games to make that possible.”
As for her team’s resounding win over the Saints, the Bermuda winger said: “We definitely came up against a young side, so I think we have to give them credit on their part because they made it really difficult for us.
“Most of the goals came in the first half. I think it was five or six in the first half. They came out in the second half and were really strong only conceding one goal, so fair play to them.”
Thompson, who is in her second season with the club, was making only her second appearance having returned from injury in her team’s 5-2 win away to Worthing last weekend.
Steve Cuss’s team clinched the league title last month with four games to spare after prevailing 2-0 away to Bristol Rovers.
