Author to hold talk on Sea Venture’s ‘aftermath’

An author and researcher is to host a talk tomorrow about the Sea Venture’s historical ties to the island.

Peter Barrett will explore the “untold story” of the ship’s wreck and discover how its aftermath not only shaped Bermuda’s history but played a crucial role in the survival of early America.

The lecture will run from 7pm to 8pm in the Bermuda Zoological Society’s classrooms at the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo.

In July 1609, the flagship of the Virginia Company famously wrecked off Bermuda’s east coast.

Its 150 passengers and crew survived and made it to shore, but ten months later, 135 departed on two ships to continue their mission to Jamestown, Virginia.

Questions Mr Barrett will explore include what happened to the remaining passengers of the ship, how many made it to Jamestown and whether any of them returned to Bermuda.

The lecture is free but a $10 donation would be appreciated, the BZS said.

Donations may be made in person ahead of the event or online at bzs.bm/support/donate.
