Bermuda Is Love launches successful meal programme
A charity celebrated a successful campaign to bring free weekly breakfasts to pupils at a Devonshire primary school.
Bermuda Is Love completed its pilot school breakfast programme, which fed more than 100 children on Wednesdays at Elliot Primary School.
Aaron Crichlow, the charity’s cofounder, said: “The programme aligns with Bermuda Is Love’s commitment to ensuring that every individual on the island has a right to food and is never forced to face hunger.
“Our goal is a future where no one has to worry about where their next meal is coming from, where everyone is treated with dignity and where students can concentrate on learning rather than hunger.”
Pupils were offered a wide range of food during their second school term, including fresh fruit, eggs, cereal and waffles.
The purpose of the programme was to offer children a balanced and filling meal, Bermuda Is Love said.
Nadia Khan, a P3 teacher said the scheme was a “welcome initiative” at Elliot Primary School.
She added: “Each Wednesday, students arrive excited to see what’s on the breakfast menu.
“It not only offers a nutritious start to the day but also promotes a strong sense of community, as students enjoy the opportunity to sit and connect with peers from other classes in a warm, family style setting.
“The kindness and dedication of the volunteers add an extra layer of warmth and many students look forward to seeing them each week.”
Ms Kahn said that she noticed many changes in her students, from their readiness to learn to youngsters arriving at school early to get a meal.
She added that the breakfast programme would be a “valuable asset” to any school.
George Barbieri, the secretary for Bermuda Is Love, confirmed that the breakfast plan would continue into the third term.
He thanked La Trattoria for its assistance in preparing the meals, as well as donations from several other businesses.
Mr Barbieri also thanked teachers and volunteers who helped to give out food.
