An investigation is under way to determine the cause of an industrial accident at the Fairmont Southampton over the weekend.

Two men were taken by ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital after sustaining serious injuries in the accident on Sunday.

In a statement, the hotel said: “We are very sorry to report that there was an electrical incident yesterday at the Fairmont Southampton that resulted in two employees being injured.

“Unfortunately, one of the injured is now in intensive care; our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.

“An investigation is under way to determine the cause of the incident.”

A police spokesman said the other man was treated for his injuries and discharged from the hospital.

The hotel said all power was switched off at the property and Belco crews attended the scene.

On Sunday, Shelly Leman, the managing director of Belco, said the company received notification of an outage at the property at about 10.40am.

She said that on arrival, Belco crews were informed that there had been an accident involving a contractor working on the hotel’s internal electrical network, and that workers at the site had sustained injuries.

“Belco crews isolated the hotel’s network from the substation and have provided technical resources to support the hotel and police with their investigations,” Ms Leman added.

“At this time I would like to offer my thoughts to those who have been injured.”
