Bermuda $5 bill voted Banknote of the Year
It’s official: for the second time, Bermuda’s distinctive pink-and-purple $5 note has come out top of the year with the International Banknote Society.
The group’s members voted it for the “Banknote of the Year Award” for 2024.
Out of nearly 100 new banknotes released worldwide last year, only 21 were deemed of sufficiently new design to be member-nominated.
The group states: “Almost from the onset of voting, the Bermuda $5 note was the overwhelming favourite.”
The new note, printed on a sturdy polymer base, features a blue marlin, dolphins and tuna fish as well as the profile of King Charles III.
The back of the vertically designed note combines butterflies, flora, Horseshoe Bay and a boat passing beneath Somerset Bridge.
The IBNS said the first runner-up was Japan’s 1,000-yen note, with China’s 20-yuan note coming second.
Other top-five contenders were the 500-peso note from the Philippines and the British £50 note.
