Star triathletes honoured at awards ceremony
Some of triathlon’s famous names shared the limelight with some new talent at the Bermuda Triathlon Association’s prize-giving awards on Sunday.
Held at Cambridge Beaches, the ceremony recognised achievements in 2024 with honours given to the best performers in local competition and those competing at elite level overseas.
It came as no surprise that Olympians Dame Flora Duffy, who finished fifth in Paris last year, and Tyler Smith picked up the awards for overseas-based athletes of the year after representing the island on sport’s biggest stage.
The award for Senior Local Female Athlete of the year was given to Marie-Lyne Dore, who won both the national sprint and Olympic distance championships. She also finished first in the Massachusetts 70.3 half ironman and the Indian Wells/California 70.3 half ironman.
Alex Waldauer was named Senior Local Male Triathlete of the Year, who won the National Sprint Championships, and was first 1st out of the water and off the bike in the Olympic Distance Championships before he had to abruptly go to the hospital for a family commitment. He finished his year in style with a fifth-place finish in his age group in the Florida 70.3 Half Ironman.
Ollie Hayward, who was recently recognised for his achievements at the 43rd government’s sports awards, picked up the Junior Triathlete of the Year award. Hayward won individual bronze and team silver at Carifta Triathlon before finishing eighth at the World Triathlon Age Group Championships in Spain in the 16-19 division. He also won the Cambridge Beaches Triathlon.
The youngest recipient at the ceremony was Naomi MacGuinness, who won the Female Junior Triathlete of Year. MacGuinness won a Carifta triathlon gold medal in the 11-12 age group but was the fastest overall competitor in that division, beating the time of the boys’ winner by nine seconds.
Gareth Yeomans and Carina Bortoli won the awards for the most improved triathletes of the year.
Adam Prunty, winner of the marathon at the Bermuda Triangle Challenge this year, won the best new male triathlete after finishing second in the national sprint championships in his first triathlon in Bermuda. Hannah Cannon was awarded the best new female trophy after improving her PB by more than 25 minutes.
Erica Hawley, MacGuinness, Karen Smith and Sanchez Smith were given special recognition awards, with Nancy Stephens receiving the Jim Butterfield Long Service Award.
Mike Cooze was named Club Person of Year for his “exemplary contributions and volunteerism”.
