Heavy fine for woman who caused grievous bodily harm

A woman was fined $2,000 after she admitted causing an accident that left a man in critical condition.

Tanzania Thomas, 23, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court to causing grievous bodily harm to Wayne Stoneham by driving without due care and attention.

The incident took place on April 23, 2023, on North Shore Road in Devonshire.

The summary of evidence and the extent of Mr Stoneham’s injuries were not read out in court.

However, it is understood that the incident occurred when Thomas exited a driveway and drove on to the westbound lane of the main road, where she collided with Mr Stoneham.

A police spokesman said at the time that Mr Stoneham suffered “life-threatening injuries” and was treated in the intensive care unit.

Neither Thomas nor two of her passengers were injured.

Thomas, from Devonshire, initially pleaded not guilty to the offence, but changed her plea yesterday when her trial was due to start.

Magistrate Craig Attridge ordered Thomas to pay the fine that day and banned her from the roads for two years.
