Theatre company holding auditions in Bermuda
Bermudians and residents are invited to audition for an upcoming musical adaptation of The Tempest next month.
Bermudian-based Devil’s Isle Shakespeare Company debuted the show, which featured about half of Shakespeare’s original dialogue and 12 new musical numbers, last year.
Séamus Miller, founder of Devil’s Isle, said the company planned to remount the production this year with as many Bermudians involved as possible.
The company is also organising acting and stage combat classes led by award-nominated actress and teaching artist Bess Kaye.
Anyone 14 years old or older can participate in the workshops, with no acting experience necessary.
Classes will highlight monologues, scenes and stage combat and take place at Treehouse Bermuda on Trott Road from April 30 to May 3.
April 30: Shakespeare monologue workshop at Treehouse Bermuda from 6 to 8.30pm
May 1: Shakespeare monologue workshop at Treehouse Bermuda from 6 to 8.30pm
May 2: Shakespeare scene study at Treehouse Bermuda from 7.30 to 10pm (Students must attend at least one monologue workshop to participate in this class)
May 3: Stage combat class at Treehouse Bermuda from 11am to 12.30pm
Suggested donations for each class are $20 for lower-income students, $60 for standard-income students and $100 for higher-income students.
Auditions for The Tempest will take place on May 3 and 4, also at Treehouse.
Any Bermudian or resident over 18 can try out for lead and understudy roles — a separate casting call will be held for US-based performers.
All those auditioning must rehearse a short Shakespeare monologue.
People with singing and musical talents should prepare 16 bars, between 30 and 45 seconds, of a song either a cappella or with their own accompaniment.
Auditions will take place between 1pm and 5pm on both days and people can reserve a spot via Sign Up Genius.
Rehearsals will take place in Washington and Bermuda starting in August, and the show will be performed in September.
All roles will be paid, with leads receiving $500 a week, and housing will be provided to those travelling overseas for rehearsals.
Devil’s Isle is also looking for an assistant stage manager for the show, who can e-mail info@devils-isle.org with any relevant work experience.
