Shipping company donates $5,000 to homelessness charity
A housing charity thanked a shipping company for the “lasting impact” of its $5,000 donation.
Home welcomed the donation from Bermuda International Shipping Ltd, which was offered to the charity through the Meyer Group of Companies in February.
Denise Carey, the chief operating officer and executive director of Home, said that the donation continued to make a difference despite having happened some time ago.
She added: “We thank BISL for this generous donation, which will make a positive impact on the lives of families experiencing homelessness.
“Partnerships like this are vital in our mission to ensure everyone in Bermuda has a place to call home.
“On behalf of our team and the people we serve, we thank BISL for their commitment to making a lasting impact.”
BISL operates the Bermuda Islander, which offers a weekly cargo shipping service between the Port of Salem in New Jersey and Bermuda.
Meyer Freight Ltd, a member of the Meyer Group of Companies, serves as the BISL’s agent in Bermuda.
A Home spokeswoman said the $5,000 donation will go towards several programmes offered at the Home for Families campus on Parsons Road.
Home for Families provides accommodation to mothers, grandmothers and children in need, and can house as many as nine families.
The campus offers the Renting Ready programme, which teaches residents about the rights and responsibilities of tenants, as well as lessons on financial literacy.
George Butterfield, the vice-president of Meyer Freight Ltd, and Konika Spence, the group’s assistant freight manager, took the opportunity to tour the campus.
Mr Butterfield said it was “vital” for the BISL to give back to the community it served.
He added: “From providing information to promoting social change, we commend Home’s work with homeless individuals and families.”
Ms Spence said: “It is heart-warming to visit Home and see what they offer to end homelessness in Bermuda.
“It’s good to see that Home provides the vulnerable with housing and connects clients with other agencies when neglected.
“From my interaction with the Home team, their work comes from the heart.”
