Warwick Academy hosts International Day
Pupils at Warwick Academy celebrated the school’s rich cultural diversity through an event geared towards encouraging a “strong sense of global citizenship”.
International Day, an annual event organised by the school’s Department of Modern Foreign Languages and hosted by its secondary students, was filled with vibrant energy, meaningful learning and a strong sense of community, a spokeswoman said.
Students were afforded an opportunity to attend school in national colours, cultural attire, international sports jerseys or clothing that reflects their personal heritage.
The celebration on Thursday started with a special secondary assembly which was attended by Andrew Murdoch, the Governor.
The event centred on global themes and values, and featured music, student reflections and performances.
During recess, pupils attended an international food tasting event where they sampled dishes from around the world.
The foods were prepared and donated by parents, and the school said the experience brought joy and allowed students to explore global cultures through cuisine.
A special donation of a large collection of international coins, amassed by students over years, was handed over to Marianne Wilcox, a British Airways representative.
The donation will support Flying Start, British Airways’s global charity partnership with Comic Relief.
Warwick Academy said that the initiative will help disadvantaged young people through projects in Britain, India, Ghana and South Africa.
Ms Wilcox said: “We’re incredibly grateful to the students and staff for their generous donation to Flying Start.
“It’s inspiring to see young people in Bermuda coming together to support children and young people in need, both locally and around the world.
“On behalf of British Airways, I’d like to say a heartfelt thank you for their kindness and community spirit.
“Personally, I am especially proud as a former student of Warwick Academy.”
During the afternoon session, students participated in a range of interactive cultural workshops, which were designed to educate, inspire and celebrate global traditions.
The school spokeswoman said that the sessions offered “something for everyone” and enriched understanding of the world through hands-on engagement and cultural appreciation.
During the event, the school held a $3 grub day, the proceeds of which will be donated to a local and an international charity.
The school said International Day continues to be a much loved tradition at Warwick Academy as it celebrates the diverse backgrounds of students and staff.
