Man denies jewellery theft

Magistrates' Court

A Southampton man has denied taking thousands of dollars worth of jewellery and clothes and damaging property.

Derrick Simons, 30, appeared in Magistrates’ Court this morning and pleaded not guilty to five charges, of causing damage to clothing and the theft of items belonging to Tara Burgess between April 7 and 17 in Southampton.

He was accused of wilfully damaging clothing worth $2507.99 and damaging a Halcyon Days enamel jewellery box worth $598.

Mr Simons is said to have taken items of clothing worth $3,715 and jewellery worth $3,643 — a white gold and diamond Tiffany pendant, a white gold and diamond Tiffany horseshoe necklace and an 18-carat gold bracelet.

He is also accused of taking jewellery including a 24-carat gold chain, an 18-carat gold ring, an 18-carat gold signet ring, a 24-carat gold engagement ring, a gold chain and a gold charm bracelet and charms. Their value was not estimated by the owner.

Magistrate Juan Wolffe released Mr Simons on $5,000 bail with one surety and set a trial date of December 19.
