Two men charged with murder and attempted murder may now not stand trial after prosecutors put the case on hold.David Jahwell Cox and Devon Rohn Hewey had been jointly charged with the premeditated murder of James Lawes, and the attempted murders of Maurice Martin and Robin Stovell.The pair were also charged with using a firearm to commit an indictable offence. All four charges stem from a March 2010 incident when newlywed Mr Lawes was shot and killed in front of an alleyway next to Place’s Place bar in Hamilton. Mr Martin and Mr Stovell were injured in the incident.Cox and Hewey had pleaded not guilty to all four counts and were due to stand trial later this month.But in Supreme Court yesterday, prosecutor Carrington Mahoney submitted a nolle prosequi to Puisne Judge Carlisle Greaves. The submission does not mean that charges have been dropped, but that prosecutors will not pursue the case for now.Puisne Judge Greaves discharged the two men from the matter, but warned that they could still face charges at a later date.
