Northlands pupils lend a hand for KBB clean-up

Litter luggers: Northlands students and KBB supporters retrieved trash disposed of improperly in the sea as part of the Marine Cleanup held on Saturday September 19. Among those helping were adults Brian Hollis and divers Doug and Monica Davis, CedarBridge student Michael Simons and at far left Northlands students Jaire Fough-Smith, Brenton Davis and Shamar Dill.

"Helping with the KBB cleanup was a great experience for my Pride Pals students as this was considered community service for them," stated Barbara Hollis, guidance counsellor at Northlands Primary School whose students helped clean up Penhurst Park Dock as part of the Marine Cleanup.

"My kids had a wonderful time on September 19th picking up trash," she continued. "We had two scuba divers and a snorkeller there as well. Of course the excitement of the day was hauling up two bikes from the water. One was left in the water as there was so much marine life attached to it. There was also a car in the water about 50 feet out."

The group collected about 10 bags of trash and separated recyclables. Among the litter they found socks, an old BBQ, chairs and a helmet, in addition to the normal bottles and tins.

Student Jahkyah Belboda felt, "we were doing a good thing for Bermuda. This helps others to see that they should clean up trash too and see how beautiful Bermuda is."

Lorry John Cervantes was "proud of what I was doing and glad I could help."

"I think the hard work kicked in when we brought up the 2 bikes from the ocean," observed Shamar Dill.

Other participants Remone Pitcher and Brenton Davis were astonished that anyone would actually throw away a bike. "Bikes can get fixed at the shop," Brenton declared.

The students actually enjoyed spending time with their friends, even though they were working hard too. Charles-Anthony Fox had fun, while Kyle Croak thought, "It was cool to pick up trash with some of my friends. There were some species on the bike like a starfish."
