Wanted: New Front Street home for the Masterworks art gallery
MASTERWORKS is looking for a new location for its Front Street art gallery, its landlord in need of the space the charity has called home for the past decade.
The group has until January to find a new base, hopefully one that will be able to incorporate its successful Artists Up Front . . . Street programme.
"We've been there for ten years," said Masterworks' assistant director Elise Outerbridge. "Gosling's has been terribly generous over the past years. We've had, basically, a peppercorn rent for it, but I think Tuscany (the upstairs restaurant) now has other plans for the space, so we really don't have any choice but to move out."
Mrs. Outerbridge added it would be nice to find another Front Street address, as the name was linked to one of Masterworks' more successful programmes for artists.
"Because the Artists Up Front . . . Street programme has been so successful, we're hoping we'll find some place where we can move on Front Street. The Botanical Gardens is great for what we're doing (in the gallery) here, but the Artists Up Front . . . Street programme ? its continuity, the people, the different artists over the years, the fact that we were able to give individual artists their own shows ? was really, really important. A lot of artists got their start by being able to hold a solo exhibit."
For the next few months, Mrs. Outerbridge said the charity would do its best to look for new accommodations.
"We've just tried to get the word out. Maybe somebody will come along and say I've got a space or I've got an idea. We're kind of open to anything right now. We do have a roster for next year, we just need a venue."
q Until January, Masterworks Gallery is located in Bermuda House Lane, at 97 Front Street.
