Independent MP Darius Tucker joins the PLP
Former United Bermuda Party MP Darius Tucker yesterday completed his journey across the floor to the Progressive Labour Party, telling The Royal Gazette: “It’s not a matter of ideology.”The Hamilton South MP said what’s in his heart is more important than political philosophy as he swelled the PLP’s ranks to 24 MPs, meaning it now boasts exactly two thirds of the House of Assembly’s seats.Mr Tucker won as a UBP MP at the 2007 general election but quit in June 2009 amid frustration over its failure to reform and has sat as an Independent since then. He announced his latest move in the House yesterday, becoming the second former UBP MP to join the PLP in just over a year, after one-time Opposition leader Wayne Furbert.Explaining why he’s now joined the PLP, he told this newspaper: “I just appreciate the skill that the Premier is using to move the Country forward during these difficult times. Difficult times require difficult decisions. I would like to help support the PLP in their policies.”Mr Tucker’s move had long been predicted by PLP members, with many pointing to his close friendship with Deputy Premier Derrick Burgess, regular appearances at party functions and tendency to vote on PLP lines. He has previously declined to comment when asked about those rumours, although he emphatically ruled it out in the immediate aftermath of his resignation from the UBP. Asked yesterday whether switching parties reflects a change in his ideology, Mr Tucker said: “In terms of myself personally, I’m a community based person.“I believe in grassroots and getting around and being among the people. Even when I was a member of the UBP, that’s one of the things I was actually about. I believe in the community. It’s not a matter of philosophy or ideology. It’s what the person is at heart and it’s what I am at heart.”Regarding his constituents, he said: “I have talked with some, but I haven’t talked to any this morning. I’m sure there will be some that will be excited; I’m sure there will be some that will be disappointed; I’m sure there will be some that just don’t have an interest in the political climate at the moment.”But he said new colleagues including Premier Paula Cox had welcomed him, saying: “They have graciously told me congratulations and said welcome on board and informed me when I need to be in caucus.”Mr Tucker’s announcement comes three days after the deadline for PLP hopefuls to file their candidacy letters with the party, but he would not say whether he’s put himself forward. “I’m prepared to serve the PLP in whatever capacity they will see fit,” he said. Lawyer Charles Richardson has previously declared his interest in fighting for the PLP in Hamilton South, while former UBP Minister Maxwell Burgess, who announced he’s joined the PLP earlier this year, is local to that area. However, former Senator Wayne Caines, who ran there in 2007, yesterday confirmed he will not be running.Mr Tucker’s move means that, of the 14 MPs who won for the UBP in 2007, as many have joined the PLP as remain in the UBP. The other ten are in the newly formed One Bermuda Alliance.
