Dillas, Sinclair await decision on retrail
Larry Sinclair will be known by the end of this month, senior Crown counsel Mr. Barrie Meade said yesterday.
Ebbin and Dillas were released from 20-year prison terms earlier this year after the Court of Appeals quashed drug convictions against them because the presiding Supreme Court judge "made a number of mistakes in his summing up.'' In the same judgment, the court quashed the convictions against Ted Ming and Colin Smith and ordered their release from prison.
But the tribunal recommended that Ebbin and Dillas should be retried and ordered them to remain in custody "until the Crown decides whether or not to proceed against them.'' The Attorney General is seeking permission from the Privy Council in London to appeal the Court of Appeals decision.
Speaking during yesterday's arraignments session, Mr. Meade told Puisne Judge the Hon. Mr. Justice Ward that proceedings into the matter will begin on Thursday and "it is anticipated that the outcome will be known by the end of the month.'' And he asked that Ebbin and Dillas, who are in custody, be ordered to return to court for mention at the next arraignment session on July 6.
Dillas is represented by Mr. Delroy Duncan while Ebbin is represented by Mr.
Perry Trott.
Meanwhile, a 49-year-old Sandys Parish man, who denied raping his daughter on February 15 and committing incest, was also ordered to return to Supreme Court on July 6 for mention.
A social inquiry was ordered for a 27-year-old mother of two who pleaded guilty to stealing more than $24,000 from the Bank of N.T. Butterfield.
Theresa Maria Dos Santos, of Southampton, is charged with stealing the money between January 1, 1991 and January 4 this year.
Represented by lawyer Mr. Tim Marshall, Dos Santos was ordered to return to court on June 24 for sentencing.
Pembroke resident Che Pennyman, who pleaded guilty to breaking into several homes on February 14 and stealing more than $27,000 worth of clothing, cash and jewellery, will also be sentenced on June 24.
A social inquiry report was ordered for 21-year-old Pennyman who is represented by lawyer Mr. Phillip Perinchief.
Tyrone Raynor, of no fixed abode, denied participating with Pennyman in one of the break-ins.
Raynor, 33, was ordered to return to court for mention on July 6.
Wendell Wayne Ible, who denied a burglary charge involving some $2,000, was also ordered to return to court on that date.
And James N. Samuels, 56, of Parson's Road, Pembroke, will be tried next Monday on charges of possessing an undisclosed amount of cocaine on or about January 18 with intent to supply.
