Five technology interns have started the first of three training weeks as part of an intensive 12-week summer programme.

They each passed a rigorous selection process to join the Technology Leadership Forum internship programme. Now they are combining classroom learning with team projects and fieldwork at a number of companies.

The combination of theoretical learning and on-the-job practice is aimed at ensuring they acquire a rich experience in the information, communications and technology industry. It is also designed to help them develop contacts and network in the community, which will assist them when searching for employment in the future.

The five interns are Alex Dore, Cameron Moulder, Ezra Turner, Somer Froud, and Zia Seymour.

Senator Jeff Baron was at the launch of this year’s programme and said: “We look forward to seeing the interns evolve and seize the countless opportunities that this programme offers them.

“Technology is not one simple, direct career path: there are many ICT-related career paths and the TLF Internship Programme provides the right template for its interns to learn more about them and to get ready as they make decisions that will impact their futures both personally and professionally.”

Also at the launch was Ian Cook, chief executive officer of the BAS Group and chairman of TLF, and Andrew Newton, vice-president, head of information technology at Validus Re.

Mr Newton said: “Validus endorses a holistic approach to student development based on providing practical experience.

“With that in mind, when the opportunity to support the TLF’s programme arose, Validus was happy to support it. Their blend of classroom-based training and internships complements our programme and provides an excellent opportunity for future IT professionals.”

The TLF was founded 10 years ago as a response to the growing need for qualified Bermudian talent in ICT field. It aims to encourage Bermuda’s information technology students to become exposed to career paths which they can pursue in the industry.
