Bermuda Institute celebrated a one-two finish as the KPMG Senior School Investment Challenge marked its tenth year.

The top team ‘Tradewins’ achieved a near 22 per cent return on their $100,000 virtual portfolio over the six-month investment period through the end of April.

In second were the ‘Investables’, another team from the Southampton school, while ‘The Walking Stocks’ of Berkeley Institute came third in the standings.

The top three teams win prizes of cash for use by their schools, but since each school is allowed to claim only one prize, fourth-placed ‘The Wolves of Warwick’ from Warwick Academy were awarded a prize.

In all, 20 teams comprising more than 80 student investors from eight schools participated, in a contest that was followed month by month by The Royal Gazette.

For the first time this year, student were able to utilise the StockTrack portfolio management system to make their trades, giving teams the opportunity to buy and sell their stocks in real time with full control of their investment portfolios through an interactive online investment programme. KPMG staff volunteered their time as mentors, advising and assisting the students.

Education Minister Wayne Scott presented the awards in a ceremony at the Society of Arts Centre last Thursday.

The first-ranked ‘Tradewins’ were Trey Simons, Azzi Mayes, Daijah Stowe, Ashe Trimm and Alexis Courtney Selvy and they won $10,000 for the Bermuda Institute.

The second-placed ‘Investables’ were Tariq Basden, Jeremiah Fubler, Ginae Hypolite, Cassie Simmons and Natisha Simmons.

Third-placed ‘The Walking Stocks’ team, comprising Jordan Payne, Kenzo Iris, Latisha Francis and Cheyne Smith won $6,000 for Berkeley Institute.

And ‘The Wolves of Warwick’, Ferdinand Arnold, Chanah Bremar, Peter Dill, Lennae Edwards, Alyssa Hayward, Mammen Joseph and Llineiko Millett, won $4,000 for Warwick Academy.

KPMG managing director Steve Woodward said: “The Investment Challenge has returned excellent value yet again resulting in a 21.95 per cent return for the first-place winning team, both in the virtual portfolios and in the benefits accruing to the students and their schools.”
