Tyrone Smith and Flora Duffy both became three-time winners at the Annual Sports Awards ceremony at the Fairmont Southampton on Saturday night.Long jumper Smith was crowned Male of Athlete of the Year for the third year running, while triathlete Duffy, the 2007 and 2008 winner, picked up the top female award.Neither athlete was able to attend the event, a far more lavish affair than last year’s significantly scaled-back ceremony held at Camden House in the Botanical Gardens. In an e-mail read out on Smith’s behalf by Bermuda National Athletics Association vice-president Michelle Williams, the Houston-based athlete admitted his 2012 had been one of mixed emotions.“The past year for me has been amazing and heartbreaking at the same time,” he said. “Reaching the final of the Olympic Games with my final qualification jump was without the doubt the highlight of my life so far.“However, faulting on a third round jump that would have secured me a medal was the one of the most disappointing moments of my life.“I can only speak for myself, but my belief is that you go to an Olympic Games to win a medal.”Smith added: “Being named Male Athlete of the Year is an amazing honour. It’s not an award just for me but for my entire support staff.”An elated Maria Duffy accepted the female award on behalf of her daughter who suffered heartache at the London Games, falling off her bike at a tricky corner when well placed.“This award is most unexpected and I know Flora is absolutely thrilled,” she said.Middle distance runner Kyrah Scraders, who claimed a silver medal at last year’s Carifta Games, was named Young Female Athlete of the Year, with talented swimmer Jesse Washington winning the male award in recognition of his medal-laden season.Washington claimed eight medals at the Caribbean Island Swimming Championships in Aruba and seven medals at the Carifta Swimming Championships in Bahamas.Scraders said she hopes to go one better by winning gold at this year’s Carifta Games in Bahamas later this month.“I’m very excited to get this award and I was quite nervous when I had to accept it,” said the teenager. “Performing in front of the Bermuda crowd at Carifta and showing them what I can do was definitely highlight for me.”Washington, who will look to add to his medal haul at next month’s Carifta Swimming Championships in Jamaica, said: “I was very pleased and humbled to get the award. I mean, to be Junior Athlete of the Year is very humbling.”There were also a number of other awards up for grabs including Special Achievement Awards, Bermuda Sport Citation Awards and Appreciation Awards as well as Minister's Awards and Special Recognition Awards.Minister’s Awards went to footballer Nahki Wells for his goalscoring exploits at Bradford City and Bermuda national cricket team captain Stephen Outerbridge, who led Bailey’s Bay to the league title, Belco Cup and Eastern Counties.Achievement Awards were handed to Tyler Butterfield (triathlon), Arantxa King (long jump), Jill Terceira (equestrian), Aaron Evans (800 metres), Jessica Lewis (Olympic parathlete), Flora Duffy (triathlete) and Tyrone Smith (long jump). The Bermuda Golf Association, Bank of Bermuda Foundation, Tokio Millennium Re and KPMG won Appreciation Awards, while Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association president Coleridge Place was honoured with a Citation Award.A Special Recognition Award was given to the Bermuda national senior netball team.
